Devlog 05: Sprint 1.0
FIRST SPRINT!
This week is the end of the first sprint. This means everything we planned should be done and we did it!
Programming wise this week was mostly spent fixing bugs and implementing a couple new features. Sintija spent some time working fixing the doors and buttons- everything works as intended now and Robot’s can no longer activate buttons if they are not near them, but another player is. We got a new model for doors, so their up/down state had to be tweaked a little. Another thing tested this week was the scrap pick-up, Sintija tried out using the same button for pick-up as for dash, using another button for pick up altogether and picking up the scrap by just walking over it. After testing we concluded that the best way is the automatic scrap pick up- this way players can focus on their movement and other robots rather than just spam clicking the pickup button. Sintija finalized the team building as well- Robots now spawn with different bodies, in the color of their team.
Big thing implemented this week is the knock-back. We discussed that it would be nice if after dashing into another player, they would not only get stunned, but also moved away. After some troubles in implementation, we got it working and robots can now knock each other around when dashing into each other!
It was a big week for art and we progressed a lot. Tamy redesigned the robots and dove into the creation of multiple particles like the flames roaring in the furnaces and the stun when you get hit. Leon and jasper worked further on the environment creating the furnaces, walls doors and buttons contained in our arena.
Jasper also looked into the making of the background after considering between a 2d-drawn plane or 3d, he went with some modular 3d-pieces to make small factory-buildings and pipes visible deep down below the factory-roof placed arena.
Character:
Let's meet our robot characters! These guys are designed, modelled and textured by Tamy. With our beautiful robot, people can empierce our game by walking and dashing into others around the level. For now, the character is just a static character without his moves. This will be the next step for this chonker. We will then start with rigging and animating the character.
The progress:
Tamy started first with, of course, making designs for the character. The points that she had to follow are following:
- Proportionally exaggerated hands and shoulders opposite to the body and head
- Top heavy model
- insect like bodies
- rounded off shapes
- arms in front
Then after everything had the green light, she started with modelling and texturing the chosen favourite design. There are 4 different colors for the characters. There are 2 colors for every team.
Particles:
For this week we also started with 2 particles. These ones are the ones that will give the player feedback while playing the game. The first particle that Tamy made was the stun particle. If the players dash into each other or the walls, this particle will be seen.
The other particle for this week is the fire particle. This one will be showen when the players throw the scrap into the furnace.
Level:
Because we restarted a big part of our game idea, The level also had to change. This time we made the level for a large part simpeler. There will be no maze, no conveyor belts, less furnaces,...
Just simple, a border wall with 2 furnaces and here and there a door to stop the scrap to be throw in
to the furnace. The lighting will be the same.
For next week:
We will plan the next sprint and decide what has the priority to further develop our game.
